Once I became a flight attendant, I started noticing how much of our everyday work is invisible to the people traveling with us. Small gestures can make a flight easier. Others make the job harder, without the passenger having any idea.

I wanted to share those things. But how? Nobody boards a plane hoping to be told off for something no one ever explained to them.

One example always stood out to me. Deplaning is almost over, and someone is still getting their belongings together. With the best intentions, they say, “You can go. I’ll need a little while to get my things organized.”

The kindness is genuine. I still had to stay on board until deplaning was finished. To that passenger, leaving last was a courtesy. For me, it meant the work was still going on. If nobody had explained that, how could they possibly know?

That was where the idea came from: an airplane survival guide told through stories, with a title that invites a little curiosity: What Your Flight Attendant Really Thinks About You.

I want readers to laugh, recognize themselves in a situation and discover things that can make the journey better for everyone. Humor makes room for a conversation that might never get started if it sounds like a reprimand.
